Wendy Robles brought figs to her session. a quiet nod to her grandmother, Mami Mitty, and a moment they shared together in Durango. On her grandmother’s land, there’s a fig tree and During a visit in August 2021, Wendy found her 71-year-old grandma climbing that tree to get the last of the ripe fruit. They picked figs together, sliced them in half, and set them out to dry. Later, on a rainy day, they stayed inside flipping through old family photos, tucked away in shoeboxes, while her grandmother shared stories.

Wendy’s roots stretch across Durango and Guanajuato, and further back to Spain on her father’s side. On her mother’s, the trail disappears into the mountains, with only a few records dating back to the late 1800s. What remains is a living archive, passed down through story, memory, and images captured in black and white.

“This project made me realize that, as a family, we don’t have many physical relics. What has been passed down to me comes mostly in the form of stories and a handful of old photographs.”

Her creative journey reflects that same sense of honoring what feels meaningful, even when it’s nontraditional. Wendy says she’s always had a clear sense of what does and doesn’t feel right. following that instinct has shaped a life and practice that’s both intentional and deeply personal.

“I tend to embrace unconventional paths as long as they make sense to me. It’s been rewarding to live in the fruits of that space.”

For her portrait session, Wendy also brought a 2025 Artist Lunar Calendar. A piece she designed and printed. This edition features moon phases and their placement in the zodiac constellations, with a sun side and a moon side, printed on heavyweight Mohawk paper. A framed version of this calendar was selected to be part of Woman Made Gallery’s annual member show, and Wendy created a digital guide to go along with it that helps people use the moon cycles for things like haircare, gardening, and fishing. It’s a beautiful example of how her design work is both personal and connected to nature and tradition.

She also included a few of the photographs she looked through with her grandma, pictures of Mami Mitty with her siblings, and one of her great-grandmother, Mama Lupita.
